Outdoor African Bedroom

Clearly this is a dream bedroom for some and a nightmare for others! I love it for the sheer simple beauty and the chance to wake up with glorious nature all around you.

This bedroom does have windows and sliding doors which gives the illusion of being outdoors.

I lived in a similar environment a few years ago and decided to move the bed onto the verandah. This lasted for a few hours before the darkness started to creep in with all the critters! Very romantic but in reality one just could not sleep. The possibility of jaguars or other large creatures wandering around whilst you slept just didn't appeal. Beautiful in the day. In the dark? -oh, mind the snakes!!

Bedroom Ideas 1

Although I'm not a great fan of patterned wallpaper, in fact wallpaper in general, this could just pass in a small, uncluttered bedroom. The padded, quilted headboard blends well, adding texture and enhancing the translucent glass and lace pillows. I've checked on Ebay and you can find many plain brown old bedside consoles/ tables for not much and transform them with retro paint. A light touch has been used here and I think it works.

As I am moving again shortly, the creative parts of my brain have fired up again and I am looking for new ways of sprucing up a fairly plain house.

Bedroom - Neutral

When I moved into my apartment my aim was to not clutter the place with trinkets and baubles and so I decided on key pieces and only purchased those. For four months I lived with the bare essentials: a bed, 1 sofa, a chest of drawers, and a small occasional table. 

That was a great experience and ensured I brought into my home only the furniture that I really needed.

My bedroom is calming and peaceful -  like this one but with less furniture!

This is an excellent example of how to manage a small bedroom. This room is long and narrow yet it has a very large bed which doesn't overwhelm the space. The high ceiling, brickwork and light-fitting, which adds a very slight sense of drama, work together very well.

Would you prefer to spend a night in a drain house or in a tent on the same patch of ground?

Bedroom

This twin bedroom is somewhere most people wouldn't mind waking up in. I love this room for its old-fashioned simplicity. The wallpaper harks back to yesteryear without being overpowering.

The room is fairly easy to recreate. The walls could be painted apple-white instead of using wallpaper and if you have an old wooden bedstead it could be brought back to life with a coat of hard-wearing paint - if it has seen better days and had a few knocks all the better.

Adding colour to jazz it up to your own tastes would be quite inexpensive. The openness and minimal look lends itself to restful sleep and space to move around comfortably. Clean lines abound and great lighting adds to the overall look.

This bedroom is so-oo romantic - even as a guest bedroom. Aim to keep the emphasis on subtlety. 600-thread Egyptian cotton bedding, vintage cotton bedlinen, comforters - all add to the physical comfort.

The matching mirrors could be replaced by co-ordinating works of art. Work with what you have currently and use imagination to improve a key piece of furniture you already have. Ensure you have sufficient light in the room, if not, then use artificial lighting to create an ambience of coziness. 

A great place to snuggle down and read a good book. A great space to wake up in!

Looking to change your bedroom without spending a fortune? This bedroom is simple yet won't break the bank trying to recreate it. Skip the wood panelling on the walls and instead paint the walls a cool calm colour. If you have a metal beadstead that has seen better days consider priming and spray painting to give it a fresh look.

Your nightstands, or bedside tables can be made simply from wooden or chipboard/plywood covered with co-ordinating fabric or painted with hardwearing paints.

Bedside lighting is important and free-standing lights tend to be more versatile than ones fixed to the wall. Lampshades are important and a bedroom requires softened light yet still bright enough to enable you to read comfortably.

Choose a main colour and add accessories to enhance the look of the whole room. Try thrift shops for old, vintage-type fabrics and make a few cushions to match for the bed. A handmade quilt can be all it takes to add that je ne sais quoi.

I like this bedroom's mix of simple styles which, should you be inspired, would ensure you maintained your own individual look. If your bedroom is compact and bijou then using neutral colours can detract from the lack of size. Neutral doesn't have to mean 'boring and bland' especially if you choose accent colours you love. Mix then, add layers, add contrasts. Make your bedroom your own special haven - far from the madding crowd!

Should I apologise for featuring another bedroom? I have my favorite rooms and bedrooms are in the Top 2. I think this room is lush, over-the-top yet restrained. Note the 'suspended' beds.
It would be easy to change the room by adding pastel colours with a few high-powered accents, change the large mat and remove the fabric from the walls. If your walls aren't up to it just slap on some paint and a few choice pieces of artwork.
A great room for guests.

I spent some time living in a beach house on a beautiful Caribbean island some years ago. My bedroom was clean, compact and the soothing sounds of the sea sent me off into deep slumber each night.
The whole ambience here is one which soothes the eyes and the heart of the hurried city-dweller. There is a distinct lack of clutter and nothing is jarring or unnecessary. A lack of frou-frou as window dressing helps too - blinds, which are the most sensible option here, add to the smooth lines.

If you aren't a fan of green on bedroom walls then this example may just help you change your mind. The key is to not be too precious about the elements that fit together. Instead you could add a thin-stemmed lamp or add muted shades of orange or pink to make it feel fresher and more modern. Throw some of your own likes and discard what you dislike; use images and ideas as a starting point. Have fun!
